Valley Curbside Recycling

Whew...starting a business takes a lot of work! I've said it more than once since Jeremy and I started talking about this venture several months ago. We've rolled back our start date twice now in the name of getting things right - the first time. At the same time, we realize that every day that goes by without us picking up recyclables is another day's worth of usable materials that end up in the Montgomery County landfill. That's not okay. So a couple of weeks ago, during a planning session at our office (a coffee shop), we were talking about how we could make a difference sooner and later. Then it hit me. In just a few weeks, our houses will be filled with the joys of the holiday season. But when the family and friends have come and gone, a pile of cardboard remains. That cardboard doesn't have to end up in a landfill, and we're going to save as much of it from that fate as we can. On December 31, 2008 we'll be canvassing the streets we serve for corrugated cardboard that we will deliver to the Montgomery Regional Solid Waste Authority for recycling. While our full operation won't be ready for launch until late January, 2009, we're prepared to do our part [for free] in helping to reduce waste this holiday season. Here are the guidelines:

1. Check our list of streets we serve. Free cardboard collection will be taking place on these streets only on December 31. If you don't live on one of these streets, send this page to someone who does.
2. Break down cardboard boxes and remove all packing materials. Unfortunately we can't take styrofoam, plastic, or other packing materials on December 31.
3. Place your flattened cardboard on the curb by 8:00 am. We're going to have a nice hot cup of coffee and then get started.
4. Keep your eyes peeled on December 31 as we canvas the neighborhood. We'd love to talk to you about our plans for bringing curbside recycling to all of Christiansburg.
