Hello! Please tell me it’s true….are you now covering C’burg residence who have Monday trash pick-up?! If so, we are ready to sign-up. Let me know what you need from us to get signed up. This will quite possibly save my marriage since we have a bi-weekly arguement on who will take the recycling.

Although we’re not doctors (well, Ryan is almost one but his area of expertise isn’t marriage counseling), nevertheless we’re thrilled to make your lives easier! What’s that?! You didn’t know we’re now picking up curbside recycling in Christiansburg on all five days of the week! Have you been living under a recycling bin or something?!

It’s true, we’re now serving Town residents with trash pickup on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. To get started, just head over to Get Started.

Get trashy!

You asked, and we’re there - for the last year, Valley Curbside Recycling has been serving only trash customers on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. It’s been a great first year thanks to you, and we are thrilled to be able to finally announce we are planning pickups on ALL FIVE DAYS OF THE WEEK beginning March 1st!

We’re in the process now of determining our initial routes and subscription lists, so if you meet the following guidelines than we want to hear from you:

you live within the Town of Christiansburg corporate limits

you want to have affordable, convenient curbside recycling available to you

you have trash pickup - or the option to have trash pickup - on either Mondays or Fridays

If you have checked yes to each of those guidelines, we need to hear from you! Email us, contact at recyclenrv.com, and let us know! It’s okay IF YOU YELL IN ALL CAPS, we’re excited too! If you’ve just now heard of us and have trash pickup on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, or Thursdays, it’s not too late for you to sign up, either. Just check out this link and you can get all the trashy details!

And for those of you who’ve been with us a while and haven’t renewed (you know who you are), we’d love to have you back! Here’s the link to keep from having to haul all that nastiness off to the dump!

Thank you for helping us expand to this point - we kept 15 tons worth of recyclable material out of the dump, and with your help we can have an even greater impact in the Town of Christiansburg in 2010! Let’s GET TRASHY!

Once again, please let us say thank you for the support you provided us as we presented to Town Council last week. Your support - through emails, tweets, Facebook, and even taking the time to come out and support us, it meant the world to us! We are grateful.

The point of last week’s presentation was to give Council an idea of what we’ve been up to over the last year. With a year under our built, and 15 TONS of material recycled, we are geared and ready for year two! We are currently serving 60% of the Town, and plans are underway to begin rolling out pickups to Monday and Friday trash pickups as well, making us accessible to 100% of those eligible for Town trash pickup! In addition, we anticipate growth not only in recycling, but in our employee numbers as well!

None of this would be possible without you, and we are deeply grateful. Thank you for getting trashy with us, and thank you to the Roanoke Times and NRVHub.com for their coverage.

Recycling is a topic that is becoming more and more of an issue that communities are giving serious consideration to, and Christiansburg is no different. Last spring, Council agreed to shelve the discussion of a Town-run program and allow Valley Curbside Recycling the opportunity to serve our customers. In that time, we’ve seen exponential growth in our customer base, and a continued interest in expansion to weekly service five days a week. We can’t meet those needs without your backing and support!

2009 has been an unbelievable year for our little trash company … thank you for being a part of that journey with us. If you are a past, present or future subscriber, or someone who’s interested in seeing the future of Christiansburg include Valley Curbside Recycling, please join us and let Council hear from you!

From The Roanoke Times’ top stories of 2009 …

Valley Curbside Recycling says it will begin offering curbside [recycling] pickup to about 200 Christiansburg residents on February 4. The town does not offer curbside recycling as part of its trash collection, and the Christiansburg Town Council suspended talks of adding the service to let the small, private company get established.

And what a year it’s been. Together, we’ve kept more than 2490 lbs of cardboard, 12800 lbs of containers, and 9950 lbs of cardboard out of our local landfill, and more plans to have an even greater impact are on the way! Together, we can have an even greater impact in the years to come.

Our sincere thanks to each and every one of you who’s connected with us; your calls and emails of support have given us the push we’ve needed to keep going, and we’re thrilled to have you there with us. We’re coming up on one full year of service in Christiansburg, and we continue to grow - in size, and in ideas! Looking forward to sharing more with everyone in 2010!

Thanks for getting trashy with us!

Don’t know if anyone saw this in The Roanoke Times this weekend (remember, that paper can be recycled at the curb in Christiansburg!), but the Virginia section had a big article entitled “Region’s leaders want to increase recycling“.

The piece focused primarily on the Roanoke and Botetourt areas of the region, but the issues at hand - lack of recycling availability, distance from curbs to recycling centers, and the comprehensive cost of a community recycling program - most definitely transfer across county lines. And those reasons shouldn’t stop us from implementing recycling programs that encourage, and even reward, resident participation. You can see how Montgomery County - including numbers from Christiansburg - measures up against other areas of the state in the image below, and if you’d like to read the full report from the Virginia DEQ, you can download it here. And you can bet we’re gonna see these numbers improve the longer Valley Curbside Recycling is around!

We’ve got a long way to go, Christiansburg, but we are moving in the right direction. Will recycling ever be a profit hog for municipalities? Most likely not. We shouldn’t be trying to judge whether a recycling program is successful by comparing it to a profit goal. Recycling will cost money, it’s inevitable - we’re dealing with commodities. What we should be paying attention to is whether we’re reducing source waste, and whether we’re having an impact on our community landfill space. If we can do those two things, than we can reduce the total cost of our community’s solid waste … and ultimately, have a tremendous impact on the overall health of the communities we live in.

So are recycling and profits mutually exclusive? No, absolutely not. Do we feel that a curbside program is crucial to the economic, sustainable and individual health of Christiansburg, both now and in the future? Without a doubt. Is Valley Curbside Recycling committed to being a part of the future in Christiansburg?

You can take it to the bank.

Wow, what a summer it’s been! As we’ve been cruising the streets of Christiansburg this summer, we’ve seen more and more trash piling up - lots of BBQs, birthdays and summer fun has been happening throughout Town, as evidenced by all the trash on the street. Old Blue is certainly smelling ripe these days, but as the amount of trash has been piling up, so has the number of blue bins that have been popping up all over Town, as well! We’re grateful to everyone for their support, and for spreading the word to friends and neighbors. We’ve opened up new routes and plan to open up more in the near future (email us if you’d like to request service on either Monday or Friday), and we continue to move forward on a number of fronts.

But every once in a while, the trash guy in us wants to clean up a bit, scrub the smell off and smile for the camera. So that’s what we did recently at our favorite local coffee shop - thanks, @baristanomics, for keeping us caffeinated - where we grinned and mugged and cheesed for an article in the New River Valley Magazine, written by Lesley Howard and photographed by Laura’s Focus Photography. A huge trashy thank you to everyone at the magazine for including us, and a special thanks to Lesley and Laura for their time.

Get trashy, everyone! But first, read the article here - NRVMagazine July-Aug 2009
